Our very first animals on the farm, the sheep are what Locke Farm's revolves around. We purchased our very first 5 sheep August 11th, 2019 (the day before our 2nd wedding anniversary - Happy Anniversary to us) and since then have grown our herd to over 60. Check out our blog to learn all about why we chose Hair Sheep and our experiences raising them.
Early spring 2020, we started our flock of birds with 5 brown egg layers and 2 Pekin Ducks. Chicken math took over and we are now at around 40 egg layers along with our 2 Pekin Ducks and 1 Guinea Fowl. We have wanted to reach the point of production that we could advertise eggs for sale so last fall (2022) we purchased 20 more brown egg layers and in spring 2023 they are now laying consistently to the point that we can advertise farm fresh eggs for sale. Please visit our Product page for information on purchasing eggs if you are interested.
Summer 2022, we purchased and raised our first 3 Kune Kune pigs. Raising pigs was an animal that we hoped to add to our farm for a few years so last year we finally took the leap and created a large paddock for them and went and purchased some. We processed all three pigs last fall and were proud to offer grass and flax fed Pork to our friends and family. We will be adding more pigs to our farm this year so please stay tuned for details on purchasing some once they are processed.
Spring 2020 along with our first egg layers, we purchased our first 25 broiler chickens as well. Since then, we raised over 200 broilers in mobile chicken tractors that were moved to fresh grass 2x a day to be raised truly on grass. While it was incredibly rewarding to see our birds living their best life, it was a lot of work each day so since we now have a baby this summer, we have made the decision to take a break this summer from Broiler chickens to get to the lake a couple of times a bit easier. If you have been following along however, you may know that we rent out a Yardbird Chicken Plucker. Please visit our "Products" page to rent our plucker.
